Common Volunteer Questions
-
The majority of the information you need about volunteering will be given at Volunteer Orientation. These sessions are scheduled periodically throughout the year based on the number of inquiries and interested parties at a given time. Orientation includes introduction to BRL admin staff, general overview of BRL programs, types of volunteer opportunities, and Policies and Guidelines for volunteering.
-
Types of volunteering opportunities can be very flexible. Admin staff will talk to prospective volunteers about their interests and determine if appropriate and suggest alternatives if not realistic. There are volunteering opportunities that involve direct contact with residents (mentoring, etc.) and opportunities that do not involve direct contact with residents (service projects).
-
If interested in direct contact with residents (i.e. mentoring or spending regular time at BRL), the process involves completing an application and in-depth background check including Motor Vehicle Report and fingerprinting, contacting references and completing online training for working with youth who have experienced trauma.
We ask our volunteers to pay for the fingerprinting process (about $53) as their first step in supporting BRL.
Once a volunteer completes the approval process, they are invited to spend some casual time at BRL while staff or other volunteers are present where they can meet residents and become familiar with the program and household.
-
Mentors and volunteers maintain regular contact with an appointed admin staff for scheduling visits and ensuring their volunteer experience is going well.
Mentor a

Mentors help our residents by listening, supporting, providing practical guidance, and encouraging positive habits and healthy behavior. Mentors spend time with the residents one-on-one or in group settings. Interested in being a positive role model and mentor to a young man?
